You may be wondering how the blue lace layers formed. It's fascinating: agates normally form inside bubbles or cavities of igneous (volcanic) basalt and, over time, are filled with water rich in silica. As the water slowly evaporates, layers of silica gel form and harden. Each layer contained different impurities, resulting in the distinctive colored bands you see. Fantastic, right?
