It’s fascinating: agates typically form inside bubbles or cavities in igneous (volcanic) basalt. Over time, these cavities fill with water rich in silica. As the water slowly evaporates, it leaves behind layers of silica gel that harden into bands. Each layer carries different impurities, resulting in the distinctive colored laces you see today.
