Blue Lace Agate Butterfly Geode Wings with AAA Banded Agate and Amethyst Druzy
We were genuinely surprised the moment this geode opened. What began as a closed formation revealed a stunning set of Blue Lace Agate butterfly wings, with an almost unheard-of crystal pattern that formed after the agate, and a gorgeous amethyst druzy center, creating a naturally mirrored specimen like delicate angel wings.
The first thing that stands out is the rare way the agate banding and quartz formation come together. The agate layers are sharply defined, with deep blue lace bands that gradually transition into crisp white laces, an unmistakable record of the stone’s growth over millions of years. As the agate finished forming, clear quartz grew next, creating a natural frame for the sparkly amethyst druzy at the center. The result is layered contrast and an aesthetic natural painting.
This piece is all natural and untreated. It was only cut and polished to reveal the wings and highlight the banding, with no dye, coatings, or enhancement.
Agates like this are very rare because several unlikely things had to happen in one geode: clean, high-contrast lace banding, a naturally mirrored wings opening, and a crystal-filled center that remained intact through formation and cutting. Most geodes either do not develop this level of symmetry, or the banding is not this crisp and continuous. Finding a piece that brings all of these traits together in one display-ready set is the kind of specimen collectors keep an eye out for.
